Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Historically Sullivan has made big, bold, extracted Merlots and for the 2013 James O’Neil Merlot it is no exception. There is abundant cherry and raspberry, with vanilla and spice exploding from the glass. Yet there is subtle savory character underlying that adds depth and complexity. These components carry over to the palate giving the wine a plushness that coats and gives a sense of sweetness. As big and lush as this wine is there is an acidity that carries and adds focus that allows this wine to linger and last. Enjoy for many years to come!
Vineyard Notes
Consistency and uniformity are the two words that best sum up the 2013 vintage. A warm dry spring brought on early bud break and allowed for even flowering. The early start permitted for vigorous canopy development and optimal berry set. Even temperatures throughout the season caused the vines to ripen the fruit easily and on time. Most of the early ripening varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay began being harvested a few weeks earlier than normal. There were a couple of warm spells, and a few small rain events that had minimal effect on ripening and quality. With that said, the warm sunny weather allowed the grapes to stay on the vines as long as necessary, which allowed optimal development of color and flavors. Most Cabernet was picked starting at the end of September and finishing in late October. Overall it was an outstanding vintage.
